After the surgery to replace the bone flap Sam had a blockage in his intestines that went unnoticed--this caused him to lose a large (and dangerous) amount of weight .  At his lowest point his weight dropped to 133 lbs.  Just tobgive an idea of how dramatic this was, before the accident he weighed 180 lbs--and this was still skinny for his 6 feet 4 inch frame.  He lost almost 30 % of his body weight.
