The day after the accident Heather and I both thought about Leo Lynch, a former priest, my father's seminary teacher and the father of two of our high school friends.  Neither of us had seen Leo or his wife Judy in years and had no reason to think we would see them now.  But we both discussed how, for some reason, we really wanted both of them to come to the ICU.  Within the hour, the elevator door opened and Leo Lynch walked off.  He had heard of Sam's accident and came to the hospital to see us.  And the Lynches continued to provide comfort during those dark, horrible days that followed.  Leo would lead wonderful prayer services for Sam in the hospital chapel--the best I've ever seen.  And Judy would bring such lightness with her sunny personality and delicious scones (they also saved us from starvation by bringing us yogurt--the only thing any of us could stand to eat).   There were many times that, after seeing Judy and Leo, all of us felt a renewed faith, like everything was going to be okay in the end.  And for that, and everything else, we are all eternally grateful.

Dear Sam,

This brings you our love, support and encouragement.  What a year in the life of a special young man, so dear to us!

Wishing you continued progress and a renewed hope in your recovery.  And a Happy Valentine's Day to your mom, dad, sisters and all.  We miss you all!  As soon as Leo is able (he had surgery on his hip recently--bec) he'll come sing to you all.  He is slowly but determinedly progressing.

Love,

Judy and Leo
