Sam had a really good night.  Bone marrow started to recover.  All counts are great.  Dr. Jones (neurosurgeon) was able to cause a scleral response in the eye (this is when they touch the white of the eye and see if the patient responds in some way--bec).  When Maur touched his eyelashes, his eyelid also responded.  He moved his index finger.  He's moving, even though he is on the paralytic drug.

Sunday, March 14th, 2005 (One month after the accident)

Had another great night.  They are turning the paralyzing drug off.  Sam has thumb movement.  Maur opened his left eye and his pupil got very large.  She had the nurse check it.  It then got smaller again.  She told Dr. Jones about it.  He said it was because he was having emotion.

Hey Sam,

I stopped writing stuff down because school was getting really hard.  But Jayne started doing emails at this time, so you can read those.  I hope you enjoy reading both.  I love you.  You're the best cousin in all the universe.

                                               Love,

                                                         Katie Bug

**This was the first of many amazing times during Sam's recovery.  Even though we went through more hard times after this point, this is when the horrible stability rollercoaster stopped and he became a little less fragile.  From this point on we were just waiting for any little sign that he was there, that he still knew us and would wake up again.  So every little twitch, grimach and pain reaction was so wonderful to see.

This is where Katie's journal entries end, but Jayne continued with the updates through March and April and Heath and I took over in August when we started this blog.  You can read Jayne's updates by going to the months on the left hand side of the blog, clicking on August and then after August comes up, clicking on March.

Just reading this again and remembering how terrified and hopeful we all felt was an amazing experience.  I felt like fainting most of the time I was writing the February and March blogs--it is still so hard to remember everything that happened.  But I am SO thankful that Katie was able to keep a daily log of what happened during that month, so that we can look back and remember the amazing odds that Sam overcame.  Way to go, miracle boy!
