Sorry for no posts lately--Heath's computer isn't working and I've been having pre-term labor problems. I *should* be laying on my side, but I think sitting is pretty close to the same thing. Maybe. Well, close enough. But I just couldn't stay away from the blog any longer!
Enough about me...now for news about the man of the hour! Sam has had another great week so far in therapy. On Sunday he had speech therapy with Randi and he was working on the /g/ sound. He got four approximations (close trys) at /g/ out of ten. So Randi challenged him to get ten out of ten next time. Well...when Randi saw him on Monday she was shocked. Not only was the back of his tongue working (it has been locked since the accident) but he was also able to do that /g/ sound. Come to find out, Sam had been practicing over the last 24 hours on the sly. That guy is always up for a challenge!
He was also working with his PT, Steven, today (Wednesday)and I could hear the wailing and "ouching" over the phone. My mom said Steven was "torturing" Sam with leg stretches and Sam was letting his extreme displeasure be known (ha...what is new). Just kidding--he has been incredibly brave through this whole ordeal.
I'll have more detailed news this weekend when I see Sam (if my contractions stop, that is). Keep praying for our guy--and check out the wonderful letter from one of Sam's ICU nurses--"Night time Kathy" under the "emails for Sam" section (that isn't her real name--I'm sure her friends just call her Kathy, but since she usually worked at night, that was what we called her.) But Night-time Kathy also had a little name for Sam in ICU..."Curly Top"! And, luckily, his curly top has grown back and is in fine form, now! (He told Heath and I that he planned on growing it out long. We were terrified at this thought and warned him that it would either turn into a giant fuzzball or maybe a weird mullet. I guess a side effect of the accident is wanting really dorky hair.)
Keep praying for Sam and all the others that are facing the same challenges that he is.
Love, Bec
