The things that Sam does now

Just astonish us.

Before it was Science Fair,

Research, Harvard, LYP...

Now it's moving toes, knee in the air,

Head peeking over the rail.

Just yesterday he did multiplication

Yet this is the boy

Who would never wake.

Doctors told us

He's not moving

(Just a reflex)

He can't be laughing

Or understanding

(Just a reflex)

Make some hard decisions

(DNR)

Wouldn't want this

For my child.

Let him go let him go let him go...

But where?

For now he laughs at family stories

And sobs

Mouth wide open,

When we speak of the night

Of the accident.

We exist

In this different world now--

With Sam

Twisted and weak

And us

Watching and waiting

For the day

When our old life

Returns.
